How to choose bar and counter stools

How tall should bar stools be, counter or bar height?

Measure the surface first, since that sets the height, not the stool. For a standard counter or island (about 36 inches), choose counter-height stools; for a raised bar or high-top (about 42 inches), choose taller bar stools. Leave 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the surface so legs fit.

How many stools fit at my island?

Allow about 24 inches of width per stool, then divide your usable counter length by that. Seat two to three at a standard island, or four along a long run, and leave a little space at the ends so stools do not hang off the edge. For a tight kitchen, choose backless stools that tuck fully under the counter.

Backless, or with a back?

Choose a backed stool for lingering at the island, and a backless stool to tuck away and keep sightlines open in a small kitchen. Add a swivel seat for everyday ease. Our designers style Bouclair's cushioned polyurethane-and-metal stools in black, oatmeal, beige, taupe, and cream to pair with most cabinetry.

How do stools work with my dining chairs?

Coordinate, don't match exactly. If the island and table share a sightline, echo one element (the seat colour, the metal finish, or the silhouette) between your stools and your dining chairs. To make the kitchen read pulled-together with less effort, shop a curated collection where the seating already works as a set.
